The Baltimore Museum of Art commissioned Post Typography design the inaugural Big Table space in the museum’s remodeled Contemporary Wing. We worked with the BMA’s education department and exhibition designer, Maria Mortati to create an engaging space where museum-goers explore the use of text in contemporary art. To illustrate this conceptual subject—one that is typically discussed in abstract, art-world terms—we constructed a series of text-based pieces, each of which represents conceptual and aesthetic different ways that artists approach text-based work. Captions that illuminate each piece extend across floor-to-ceiling wall lettering, turning the space into an immersive, room-size infographic. We collaborated with the education department to conceive the Big Table’s activities, making the room an interactive hub for audiences of all ages to make their own text art.
